Many people, especially those who live in places with cold climates, rely on firewood for heating and cooking. You can only do so much with manual tools such as axes. If you need to make a lot of firewood in a short span of time, then you need to use a log splitter.

Manual methods of wood chopping take up a lot of time and energy. Meanwhile, log splitters allow people to make all the firewood they need at the fraction of the time and effort. Many people still swear by their axe or saw, understanding that chopping wood by hand still carries with it a sense of satisfaction derived from hard work. But let's be real. Why do the grunt work when there are ways to do the same thing faster and cheaper?

People have always found ways to make their work simpler and better, and chopping wood is no exception. In this case, an electric log splitter does the bulk of the job for you. All the user has to do is to place the log on the machine and pull a lever. The log is split and you can then make smaller pieces of firewood.

Log splitters are powerful machines but they are simple in their design. It only has a few components: motor, valve, oil pump and cylinder. These parts all work together to make your life easier. The motor, for instance, produces the energy required for the machine to work. The valve gets oil from the oil pump. The cylinder, responsible for the actual splitting, is then propelled forward by the valve.

Log splitters are not toys, and all that raw power requires caution and mindfulness from its users. Anyone using a log splitter should know how to safely and properly use it. They should also understand that safety should be their top concern.

Here are some important safety tips for log splitter operation.

1. Read the machine literature

All users should read their log splitter's accompanying literature such as the user manual and other safety pamphlets. The literature should contain most of the information one needs to know about the machine: technical specifications, operational instructions, maintenance directions and safety precautions. Also, heed any labels on the machine itself, if there are any.

2. Wear personal protective gear

Personal safety gear is not optional. Many forestry and logging professionals have been injured or killed at the workplace and the severity of their injuries could have been lessened had they worn protective gear. All users should wear personal protective gear when using a log splitter.

Eyes and face: Chunks of wood and other debris may fly out when the cylinder splits the log in half. Flying debris pose a risk to the user and other people nearby. Safety gear such as goggles and face shields help protect the eyes and face against such risks.

Hands: While log splitters do the bulk of the work for you, you still have to manually carry and position the log onto the machine. Heavy-duty safety gloves help protect your hand from scratches and cuts and also improve your grip.

Feet: Steel-toed boots should be worn when using a log splitter. The boots help improve your stability when loading and unloading logs, and also protect your feet from accidental compression.

Similarly, the safety gear should be paired with work-appropriate clothing. Loose-fitting clothes, jewellery and other dangling objects are not to be worn when using a log splitter.

3. Keep the work area clear

Keep the work area clear of possible tripping hazards, flammable substance and other impediments to safe and proper operation. The area immediately around the electric log splitter should clear for at least 10 ft. in all directions.

Also, children, animals and unauthorised personnel should not be allowed to approach the machine. As one person works the machine, another should keep watch for anyone approaching. Turn the splitter off if anyone comes too near.

4. Turn the log splitter off before making adjustments

Always shut the machine down before making adjustments to log placement or splitter settings. While splitting logs, it's normal to notice that adjustments have to be made. Turn the machine off first, then perform the necessary adjustments.
